Gallery of Acoustics
St. Louis, Missouri, November 1995
The first Gallery of Acoustics was displayed at the 130th Meeting of the ASA in St. Louis. It consisted of six still image entries and five video entries. The results of the judging lead to agreement on the four best entries, but did not yield a single, clear winner.
The entries, beginning with those selected as Judges’ Choice are:
Judges’ Choice.
“Collapsing cavitation bubble.” (Still)
LAWRENCE CRUM, University of Washington, Applied Physics Laboratory.
A B&W photo of a cavitation bubble collapsing near a solid surface. This entry is a visually striking photo, with good contrast and depth, showing an intriguing physical phenomenon.
Judges’ Choice.
“Acoustic dunes.” (Still)
BRIAN FERGUSON, GARY SPEECHLEY, AND LIONEL CRISWICK, Defence Science and Technology Organization, Maritime Systems Division, Australia.
A 3D perspective image of a multisource sound field. Interesting lighting effects are used to make a familiar type of plot very appealing. The presentation is enhanced by a tasteful frame.
Judges’ Choice.
“Magnetic resonance imaging of acoustic shear waves.” (Video)
